“The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.”

Pick one thing. One thing that you are most passionate about saving from the whirlwind. Do everything you can to keep it safe. The advancing holocaust forces us to make tough choices--what to save; what to lose.

I cross-posted this, so all my subscribers got it, with this message: "There's reporting on what happens and there's brilliant writing about what happens. If Substack had a contest for the best writing, this piece could win it!"

It's so depressing that I spend days trying to block it out...and then...but it's always going to be here as long as Trump and Republicans are in power!

My solution to this toxic combination of overwhelm, uncertainty, chaos, and threats is to counter it by developing and deploying Elders.

Elder, in the way I distinguish Elder, is not defined only by age, but someone who possesses wisdom, equanimity, life experience, and self-understanding. They bring a presence of calmness, composure, insight, and humor.

This isn’t imaginary. The numbers are there. Of the 59 million people now over age 65, at least 12 million of them are immediate candidates to become Elders. Furthermore, this 12 million holds over $200 trillion in wealth as an aggregate. The combined aggregate wealth of Bezos, Musk, and Zuckerberg is approximately $505 billion, which is 0.25% of $200 trillion.

The numbers are there. The wealth is there. The ‘smarts’ are there. The response to being violated is there. The wisdom and presence of Elders will be healing.

P.S. We are already down the road converting Older to Elder and picking up steam.

We must learn to live like we do after an eye exam when our eyes can’t take the glare. With extra glasses, and time, we resume whatever battle life - citizenship - demands.

We can handle that while we figure out ways to outsmart him and ways to rid the Democratic Party of its arrogance that’s made it the lesser of two evils because it ignores lots of important truths.
